4 Ways We Make Eco-Friendly Wood Furniture

Tuesday, March 01, 2016

What do we mean when we say that Cisco Home furniture is eco-friendly? It all starts with the wood. A lot of lumber goes through the doors of our factory, and we make sure that it has the most sustainable origins possible. These are four main ways that our wood furniture is good for the planet:

FSC-Certified Wood

New wood furniture by Cisco Home is made of Forest Stewardship Council-certified maple, white oak, and walnut, and the frames of our upholstered furniture are made of FSC-certified alder. The FSC is an international nonprofit that appraises commercial forests for sustainability—making sure that more trees are planted than are cut down, that forests are operated in harmony with local ecosystems, and that indigenous communities aren’t hurt by forestry. As Pepe Pinedo, who runs the LA workshop where most of our wood furniture is produced puts it in our video Crafting Wood Resposibly, “It gives you peace of mind” to know that new wood in our furniture isn’t damaging the planet.

Reclaimed and Repurposed Wood

At Cisco Home we are always looking for inventive ways to upcycle discarded wood into beautiful new pieces of furniture. We use wood from dying trees in urban areas and salvage wood from buildings that are being torn down, most often in our native LA, and are always on the look out for creative ways to upcycle wood. This means reclaimed Douglas fir in dining room tables, white oak from wine barrels in the Vino Side Table, and grape boxes transformed into tables (like the Grape Box Coffee Table).

Nontoxic Adhesives and Finishes

Much mass-produced wood furniture contains glues and finishes containing formaldehyde and other chemicals that can be harmful, both to your health and the planet’s. But we use only natural finishes (such as beeswax and fruit vinegar-based finishes) and adhesives, making our wood furniture a safe and healthy choice for your home.

Quality Construction

The most eco-friendly wood furniture is the kind that lasts for decades, reducing the need for more resources to be used. We handcraft our furniture to last a lifetime, creating family heirlooms that can stand the test of time in both durability and design.
